Unfinished tasks
A Socratic walk-through of unfinished tasks — reasoned out one step at a time, not lectured.
The question we started with
THE QUESTION #Why does a task you were interrupted in the middle of keep returning to mind when a finished one is gone by evening?
Think of the last thing you finished today. Can you still describe it in any detail, or has it gone? Now think of the thing you were halfway through when someone came to the door. That one is probably still with you — and worse, it has been arriving unbidden, in the middle of conversations that have nothing to do with it.
This is backwards from how memory is supposed to behave. The finished task took more effort and reached further; you did more of it. Yet it is the abandoned fragment that persists. So something other than amount of work is deciding what stays accessible.
Reasoning it through
REASONING #Ask what a goal has to be, mechanically, for you to pursue one at all. A goal cannot be a single event, because pursuit takes time and gets interrupted. It has to be a standing condition — something that persists across other activity and biases what you notice, what comes to mind, and what feels urgent. Otherwise you would abandon everything the moment you looked away from it.
If that is right, then the mind needs some marker meaning "this is still live", and that marker has to be discharged somehow, or you would accumulate them forever. The obvious discharge is completion. Finish the task and the marker clears; the material it was keeping accessible drops back to ordinary status; by evening it is gone.
Now the interrupted task falls out for free. It never cleared. The marker is still set, so the material is still being kept accessible — and accessibility is not a polite state. It means the content is easier to retrieve, which is exactly why it surfaces during unrelated tasks. The intrusion is not a malfunction. It is the mechanism working, at a moment you did not want it to.
This is the neighbourhood of the Zeigarnik effect, which is the classic name for the finding: interrupted tasks are recalled better than completed ones. Bluma Zeigarnik reported it in the 1920s, and the origin story — a waiter who could recite unpaid orders and forgot them the moment they were settled — is so tidy that the effect has become common knowledge. Here honesty is required. The replication record is mixed. Later work found the effect inconsistent, and dependent on things the original framing did not emphasise: how much the person cared, whether they expected to resume, whether the interruption implied failure. Treat it as suggestive, not solid.
What is sturdier is the underlying claim rather than the memory result: an unmet goal keeps goal-related material accessible, and that accessibility has costs elsewhere. Masicampo and Baumeister reported something genuinely useful about the discharge — that unfulfilled goals interfered with performance on unrelated tasks, but that the interference disappeared for people who had written down a specific plan for finishing. Not finishing. Planning. That result also comes from a literature and a period that warrants caution, and it has not had a strong independent replication, so hold it as a good hypothesis rather than a fact.
But notice what it would mean if it holds. The marker is not asking for the task to be done. It is asking for the task to be handed off — to a time, a place, a next action — after which it can stop keeping the whole thing in mind.
The analogy
THE ANALOGY #An unfinished task is an open bracket. Once you have written one, you cannot stop holding the rest of the sentence in view; every clause that follows is read as still inside it. Closing the bracket costs almost nothing, but until you do, the whole structure stays loaded.
A bracket is either open or closed, whereas the mind's version is graded and negotiable — a goal you genuinely abandon closes without ever being finished, and a goal you care about enormously stays half-open even after the task is done.
Clarifying the model
THE MODEL #Three refinements connect the steps. First, what persists is not the whole task but its accessibility — you are not rehearsing the report, you are more likely than usual to think of it. That is why the intrusions are fragmentary and badly timed rather than useful.
Second, closure and completion are not the same thing, and conflating them is the common mistake. Abandonment closes a goal. So, apparently, does a sufficiently concrete plan. So does someone else taking it over. Completion is one route to discharge, not the definition of it.
Third, the cost is real but it is not the cost people assume. The problem with an open loop is not that you might forget it — you conspicuously will not. It is that keeping it accessible is spending something, and the spending shows up in the unrelated task you are trying to do instead.

Everything hinges on the three arrows leaving Interrupted: only one of them is finishing the task. The self-loop is the symptom you actually notice — the goal re-presenting itself while you are doing something else — and it keeps firing for as long as the goal sits in that state, which is why the route out matters more than the route back to Pursuing.
What became clearer
WHAT CLEARED #The unfinished task returns because it was never closed, and an open goal is maintained by keeping its material unusually accessible — so the intrusions are the maintenance, felt from the inside. The classic memory demonstration of this is shakier than its fame suggests, and the plan-writing result is promising rather than proven. What survives both caveats is the practical shape of the thing: if the loop closes on discharge rather than on completion, then naming the next action and when you will take it is not procrastination dressed up. It is the cheapest available way to put the bracket down.
