The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why does a teenager who cannot fall asleep at ten find it just as hard to wake at seven?

The household explanation is that the teenager chooses to stay up — the phone, the friends, the pleasure of being unsupervised at midnight — and pays for it in the morning. Laziness at one end, consequence at the other.

Test that against the pattern in the question. If a teenager is simply staying awake too long, they are running a sleep debt, and a person in sleep debt falls asleep more easily, not less. Deprivation should make ten o'clock easier over time, not harder. Instead both ends resist: the same body cannot get to sleep at ten and cannot get up at seven. Two resistances pointing in opposite directions are not one motivational failure. What single change would produce both at once?

Reasoning it through

Only a shift in timing. Not less sleep, not weaker willpower — the whole window moved.

To see why that produces both symptoms, notice something counterintuitive about sleepiness. It is not one signal but two, pulling against each other. One is homeostatic: pressure to sleep accumulates the longer you have been awake, and discharges while you sleep. That part matches intuition. The second does not. A circadian signal from a clock in the hypothalamus actively promotes wakefulness, and it does not decline steadily through the day — it climbs, peaking in the hours just before habitual bedtime. Sleep researchers call that stretch the wake maintenance zone, and it is the hardest time of the whole day to fall asleep, however tired you are. You sleep at night not because alertness ran out but because that signal finally drops away and lets accumulated pressure win.

Now shift that clock two hours later, and hold the alarm where it is.

The evening consequence is immediate. Ten o'clock, which for an adult sits after the alerting signal has begun releasing, now falls squarely inside the teenager's wake maintenance zone. They are not resisting sleep; sleep is being actively opposed. Lying in the dark trying harder does nothing, because effort is not the variable.

The morning consequence follows from the same shift. Core body temperature bottoms out a couple of hours before natural waking, and that trough is the point of deepest sleepiness in the whole cycle. Move the clock two hours later and seven in the morning stops being the tail of the night and becomes, biologically, its middle. The alarm is not ending the teenager's sleep; it is interrupting it near its lowest point.

A second, quieter change works alongside the shift: across puberty, sleep pressure appears to build more slowly through the waking day than it did in childhood. So at the same hours awake, the older adolescent genuinely feels less sleepy — the accumulating side of the tug-of-war weakens at the very moment the opposing side moves later.

Is this really biological, or is it screens and social life? Both contribute, but the delay is not merely cultural. It tracks pubertal stage rather than school year or age. It has been observed in communities with little electric light, and something similar appears in adolescent rodents and primates, which do not have phones. And it reverses: lateness peaks somewhere around age twenty, then advances steadily for the rest of life. A developmental arc that turns around on its own fits badly with a story about bad habits.

Imagine a house in which every clock — the boiler timer, the lights, the alarm — has been quietly set two hours slow, while the school bell across the road has not. Nothing inside is broken. The heating comes on, the lights dim, the alarm rings, all in sensible order relative to one another. The household's whole schedule simply sits two hours behind the one it has to keep, so it is wide awake when the street is dark and dead asleep when the bell goes.

A circadian clock is reset only by light arriving at the right time of day, and moves by at most roughly an hour a day — so no decision or single early night resets it, and a Sunday-night attempt to be on time by Monday asks for something the mechanism cannot do.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

The common summary — "teenagers need more sleep" — is true but the less useful half. Adolescents do need somewhere around eight to ten hours, more than most adults. But an adult on a teenager's schedule would cope; a teenager on an adult's schedule cannot, because the problem is phase, not quantity. That is why "just go to bed earlier" is less advice than an instruction to fall asleep during the one part of the day when the body is most committed to keeping you awake.

Light is worth separating from the clock itself. Evening light delays the clock further; morning light advances it. A delayed teenager therefore falls into a self-reinforcing arrangement — bright screens late, a dark winter journey to school early — which deepens the delay that caused it. Screens amplify a developmental shift rather than originating it. Whether adolescents' clocks are also intrinsically more sensitive to evening light has some support but remains a live question, and the weighting of endogenous shift against modern light exposure is genuinely argued — studies in low-light communities find the adolescent delay present but smaller.

One structural consequence follows. Fixed start times truncate sleep from the front on five nights and permit recovery on two — social jetlag. Districts that pushed start times later generally find students sleep longer rather than going to bed later still, which is what you would expect if the delay were biological and the wake time were the binding constraint.

The teenager is not short of resolve at both ends of the night. A single change — the circadian clock running later through puberty — explains both symptoms at once, because the same signal that keeps you alert in the evening is the one whose trough makes early waking so brutal. Falling asleep at ten means sleeping during the body's most wakeful hour; waking at seven means being pulled out near its lowest point. Nothing here is a failure of character. It is a fixed alarm clock arguing with a moving biological one, and only one of the two can be reset by choosing to.
