The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why does the wind at the coast blow inland during the day but out to sea at night?

Stand on a beach through a clear summer day and the wind is in your face; before dawn it is at your back. Sunlight does not push air, so nothing drove the change directly. What could reverse daily, when the two things on either side of the shoreline are both simply sitting there being shone on?

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

The sun delivers roughly the same energy per square metre to the water and to the sand a few metres away. So if the wind reverses, the difference cannot be in what arrives. It has to be in what each surface does with it.

Ask what it takes to raise a surface's temperature. Four things separate water from land, and all four point the same way. Water's specific heat capacity is about 4.2 kilojoules per kilogram per kelvin, roughly four times that of dry soil or rock, so the same energy buys a quarter of the temperature rise. Water is transparent, so the energy is deposited through metres of depth rather than the top centimetre. Waves and currents stir that warmed layer down into a far larger mass. And evaporation spends a large share of the incoming energy on the phase change rather than on warming. Land has none of these outs: a thin, opaque, stationary skin absorbs the energy and heats.

The consequence is a mismatch in amplitude, not in average. Over a clear summer day a sea surface may change by a fraction of a degree while the land beside it swings ten or twenty; at night the asymmetry runs backwards, and land radiates its thin store away until it is colder than the sea. That is the whole engine: not that land is warmer, but that land is swingier.

Now how does a temperature difference become a wind? Not by warm air rushing sideways. Warm air over the land expands the air column upward, so a few hundred metres up there is more air overhead on the land side, and pressure aloft is higher over land. Air aloft therefore drifts seaward. That drift removes mass from the land column, surface pressure over the land drops — and only now does the surface air flow inland to replace it. The circulation is a loop with two limbs, and the sea breeze you feel is the bottom one. At night the land chills, its column contracts, the sign of the loop flips, and the weaker land breeze runs out to sea.

Two honest complications. The land breeze is not the mirror image of the sea breeze: night-time contrasts are smaller and the cold, stable air near the ground resists stirring, so land breezes are shallower and gentler. And the whole thing only appears when the large-scale weather is quiet — a strong synoptic wind swamps a circulation this local, which is why the reversal is a fair-weather habit rather than a daily guarantee.

Think of two people in the same sunbeam, one in a thin cotton shirt and one in a heavy coat. The sunlight is identical, but the shirted one heats within minutes and cools just as fast when a cloud passes, while the coated one drifts slowly and barely responds. Any draught between them is set up by the difference — and its direction flips as soon as the sunbeam goes, because the fast one now cools past the slow one.

People generate their own heat and the room's draught is driven by a difference in temperature at one level, whereas the atmosphere's circulation is driven by pressure differences that appear first aloft, from the expansion of the whole air column — so a sea breeze is a two-storey loop, not a sideways slide.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Differential heat capacity is a claim about rate, not about totals: over a year the sea near a coast may average warmer than the land and the daily reversal still runs, because what matters is which surface swings faster within the day. That is also why the sea breeze starts mid-morning rather than at sunrise, and why its leading edge behaves like a small front, lifting air along it — over Florida, reliably enough to trigger afternoon thunderstorms.

Now the correction that matters most, because it runs against the usual teaching. The monsoon is routinely presented as a sea breeze the size of a continent, and that is not the right account of it. The monsoon is better understood as the seasonal migration of the tropical rain band, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, with a cross-equatorial flow deflected into a southwesterly and an onset made abrupt by the latent heat released in its own condensation. Land-sea heat contrast contributes, but the phenomenon is planetary. The sea breeze is the genuine article the monsoon gets mistaken for: local, thermally direct, driven purely by the land-sea contrast, and running on a daily rather than an annual clock.

It is not the land being hot that matters but the land changing fast, so the sign of the contrast flips twice a day, and with it the pressure difference that drives the flow. And the reasoning does not scale up: the monsoon looks like a giant version of this and is a different animal.
