Overtraining

The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why can an athlete who trains harder every week for a month end up measurably slower than when they started?

An athlete decides to be serious about a season. Each week is a little harder than the last: more distance, more intensity, fewer easy days. Four weeks in, the times are worse. Not plateaued — worse. Resting heart rate has drifted, sleep has gone poor, the legs feel heavy on the warm-up, and the sessions that were comfortable in week one are now a struggle.

The obvious reading is that the athlete has not tried hard enough, and the obvious response is to try harder still. That response usually makes it worse, which is the first clue that the obvious reading is wrong. Something about the relationship between work and improvement has inverted, and we should want to know what.

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start with the thing that is easy to state and easy to forget: training does not make you fitter. Training makes you worse, temporarily, and the improvement happens afterwards. A hard session leaves a muscle with damaged fibres, depleted substrate, and a disturbed internal environment. The adaptation — more mitochondria, more capillaries, more contractile protein, a better-tuned nervous system — is built during the recovery that follows, out of the raw material of that disturbance.

So performance at any moment is the sum of two things moving in opposite directions: a fitness that accumulates slowly and decays slowly, and a fatigue that accumulates fast and decays fast. Add a session and both go up. Wait, and fatigue falls away faster than fitness does, so what is left is a net gain. That gap in decay rates is the entire mechanism by which training works.

Now ask what happens if the next session arrives before the fatigue has cleared. The fitness gain is smaller than it would have been, because the adaptive work was still in progress. And the residual fatigue is carried forward and added to. Do that once and you have a hard week. Do it every week for a month and the carried-forward term compounds, while the fitness term — the thing you were buying — is being underpaid each time.

Follow that far enough and you get a genuinely counter-intuitive result: the athlete doing more work is accumulating less fitness, because the conversion of work into adaptation requires an input they have stopped supplying. Recovery is not the absence of training. It is the part of training where the adaptation actually happens.

But that alone gives you tiredness, not the syndrome. What makes prolonged overreaching different from being tired is that the response changes, not just the level. Chronically under-recovered athletes show a blunted hormonal response to a hard effort, a heart rate that will no longer climb to its usual maximum in a race, a mood disturbance out of proportion to the training, and disturbed sleep — which is cruel, since sleep is where much of the repair was going to happen. That last point is a feedback loop worth pausing on: the state caused by insufficient recovery degrades the mechanism by which recovery occurs.

There is one more structural feature. The athlete's own perception is an unreliable instrument here, and unreliable in a specific direction. Effort feels harder, so the athlete concludes they are unfit, so they train more. The symptom is read as evidence for the very response that produced it.

Think of a market trader who borrows to buy stock, sells it at a margin, and repays the loan from the takings. The borrowing is not a sign of trouble — it is how the business works, and each cycle leaves a little more capital than before.

Now suppose they borrow again before selling the previous load. The stock piles up, and the interest on the earlier loan is still running. Each new cycle is entered with a heavier debt and a smaller share of the takings available to reinvest. Nothing dramatic happens on any single day. The business is turning over more goods than ever, and looks busier than it has ever been, right up to the point where the debt service consumes the margin entirely.

A trader can read their own ledger and see the debt written down, whereas an athlete's accumulated fatigue is not directly observable — it has to be inferred from proxies that are noisy and lag behind, which is precisely why the condition is usually recognised late.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Three refinements, and the first is the most important.

"Overtraining syndrome" is a diagnosis of exclusion with no agreed biomarker. There is no test for it. The clinical definition requires a long-lasting performance decrement that persists despite adequate rest, and the exclusion of everything else that produces the same picture — low energy availability, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, depression, undiagnosed infection, disturbed sleep from a non-training cause. That matters practically, because several of those alternatives are common, treatable, and would be missed by an athlete who has decided the answer is fatigue. It also matters intellectually: a syndrome defined by what it is not, and diagnosed only in retrospect, is a much weaker object than the confident training-manual accounts suggest.

The distinction from functional overreaching is real but is only visible afterwards. Deliberately burying an athlete for two or three weeks and then tapering is a standard and effective method: performance dips, then rebounds above where it started. The same first two weeks look identical whether they will end in a rebound or in months of stagnation. What separates them is what comes next, which means the label can only be applied with hindsight — and this is a genuine limit on the concept, not a gap in anyone's knowledge.

Low energy availability is a confound that often is the cause. An athlete increasing training without increasing food arrives at many of the same signs — hormonal disturbance, poor recovery, declining performance — by a route that has nothing to do with training load as such. The mechanisms overlap, and separating them in an individual case is difficult.

The account here is falsifiable. If accumulated fatigue with impaired conversion is the mechanism, then a sufficiently long, genuinely complete rest should restore performance — and the time required should scale with how long the athlete has been in deficit. If a properly rested athlete stayed slow for months with every alternative excluded, the simple accumulation model would be inadequate and something with a longer memory would be needed.

The paradox dissolves once you stop treating training as the thing that makes you fitter and start treating it as the thing that creates a debt which recovery converts into fitness. On that reading, more work with less recovery is not a stronger dose of the same medicine; it is a different intervention with a different sign. The athlete's instinct to answer slowness with effort is exactly backwards, and it is backwards for a reason that is built into how the symptom presents.
